Preparing Faculty to Teach Distance Education Courses
It is essential that the faculty who teach distance education courses are proficient in their subject area, skilled with technology, and are also specifically prepared for the unique challenges of teaching in a dynamic online environment.

 Status  Requirement

:: Full-time Instructors Fulltime instructors who wish to design, develop, or teach a hybrid or online course must first successfully completed IDTG31 Teaching with Technology. Effective January 1, 2015 – ETC230 will no longer be accepted.

:: Adjunct Instructors Adjunct instructors who wish to design, develop, or teach a hybrid or online course must first successfully completed IDTG31 Teaching with Technology. Effective January 1, 2015 – ETC230 will no longer be accepted.

Adjunct instructors who will ONLY BE TEACHING an online course are permitted to choose one of the following options in order to qualify them to TEACH an online or hybrid course:
  • Option One: Complete IDTG31 Teaching with Technology


ETC230 Expiration Date
ETC230 hasn’t been offered since early 2009. Since then, the online learning landscape has changed significantly. The Vice President of Academic Affairs and Deans of Instruction have agreed that effective January 1, 2015 – ETC230 will no longer be accepted as a qualifier to teach an online or hybrid course.

Distance Education Instruction Certification Waiver

Effective September 1, 2013 – Fulltime and adjunct instructors are permitted to apply for a Distance Education Instruction Certification Waiver.   The College will accept a comparable three credit course or online teaching certification from an accredited college or university.

Waivers will be granted at the discretion of the campus Dean of Instruction and the Assistant Vice President for Instructional Design and Technology.  Instructors seeking this waiver are instructed to provide their Dean of Instruction and the Associate Vice President of Information and Instructional Technology with a short summary of the comparable three credit course or online teaching certification via email.  Once a decision has been made, the Assistant Vice President for Instructional Design and Technology will relay the final decision to the instructor.
