Certainly, free software like screencast-o-matic has made filming video lectures much easier than it was in the past. You don’t need a professional cameraman, a big production room, or any equipment fancier than a microphone, but it still takes a good deal of planning and effort. If you’ve ever tried including a few screencasts in your course, you might wonder whether or not the students are actually watching them.

Well, over at Casting Out Nines, Robert Talbert analyzes some pretty interesting research on the subject from the Journal of Engineering Education. Talbert explains that this study found that almost 75% of 262 students watched video screencasts in a class even though they were completely optional. He postulates that given some external motivations, such as regular quizzes, you might be able to get every student to watch. The rest of Talbert’s post is worth a read, as it gives plenty of other insights into how and why students view screencasts.
