Are you ready for Delaware Tech’s Instructional Innovation Conference? Here’s a sneak peek at six more workshops to be offered. Click on the workshop titles to visit that workshop’s static page, where you can leave comments and questions for the presenter and other participants.

Note that each workshop is classified as either a practice session or a conversation session.

Practice sessions focus on sharing, modeling, and discussing pedagogy in higher education, while allowing for interaction among session participants. These sessions go beyond simply “why to” to include “how to”. Participants should come expecting to do something, not just to receive information.

Conversation sessions provide a time and space for participants to discuss pedagogy in higher education. Each session will consist of a brief (10 minutes or less) presentation to contextualize the topic, followed by active participant discussion.

Student Engagement In and Out of the Classroom

Practice Session

Student engagement in education refers to the degree of attention, interest, curiosity, and the psychological investment that students demonstrate when they are learning. Engagement motivates students to build relationships and progress in their education. In this presentation, we will present methods to increase student engagement using activity resources in the classroom, and creating your own videos, YouTube channel and website for engaging students outside of the classroom. We will share the impact these tools have had in our students’ learning. We will end the session with open discussion of what you have used to increase student engagement.

What Does Quality Instruction at Delaware Tech Look Like?

To start off the workshop, a short presentation showcasing selected DTCC instructors and instructional practices will be featured.  Additionally, some basic research documents in quality education will be distributed to act as further talking-points.  The majority of the workshop will consist of small-group framework construction of what makes up quality instruction.  This will be followed by whole-group sharing and discussion/debate.

What Do the Best College Teachers Do Best?

Who’s the best teacher you’ve ever had? Did the name of an instructor immediately come to mind? Did you have a nostalgic feeling for how much you loved that teacher’s class or perhaps how that teacher inspired your career choice? According to Ken Bain, the author of What the Best College Teachers Do (2004) it doesn’t matter what you teach, but rather how you teach it. This workshop is inspired by Bain’s collection of anecdotes, but, more importantly, it offers strategies that you can use to enhance your teaching—just in time for the first week of class.

Buzz! Buzz! – Reinforcing Student Learning Through Games

Presenting some ideas about review/reinforcement games that can be played in the classroom to help students increase their understanding of the material, improve exam grades, and succeed in the course. The buzzers that I purchased through a faculty innovation grant will be demonstrated. A practice Jeopardy-style game will be played to give faculty the opportunity to see the students’ perspective in playing the game. Student opinions of the use of the buzzers will be presented. The workshop will end with faculty discussing games that they have played in the past that have worked in their particular content areas.

Universal Design in Higher Education: Meeting the Diverse Learning Needs of All Students

This presentation will focus on the concepts of Universal Design in higher education. Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Universal Instructional Design (UID) and Universal Course Design (UCD) are terms used somewhat interchangeably to describe the proactive process of designing instructional environments to be accessible and usable by all students to the greatest extent possible. In this session we will be learning about the application of Universal Design to higher education and will be putting these principles to practice. At the end of this workshop you will have a toolbox of resources designed to help you incorporate the principles of Universal Design in your courses.

During this session we will be working to modify or create a specific activity based on the principles of Universal Design. Please come to the workshop with an activity or lesson you have in mind!

Expand the Walls of Your Classroom

Conversation Session

Energize your curriculum and enhance the student learning experience by incorporating campus activities. It’s easy with the new FY 15 co-curricular menu: a comprehensive list of Collegewide student activity offerings. The menu will allow you to select and incorporate activities that supplement and/or complement curriculum without leaving campus. Research reveals an increase in persistence when students participate in campus activities; CCSSE results indicate the need to increase opportunities for students to participate in campus events. Be among the first to view this new resource; see the menu’s location and content, and explore the possibilities – including connected assignments – in a conversation with colleagues.
