Supporting Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

Scientist Spotlights is a website dedicated to highlighting the contributions of underrepresented groups in the scientific community.

There are a variety of categories to search in this website that include:

Agriculture Biochemistry
Botany Cardiology
Cognitive Science Forensic Science
Genetics Muscle System
Psychology and more!

Scientist Spotlight LogoThis mission of the website is supported by interviews, articles, and videos featuring scientists from diverse backgrounds. These resources help to break down stereotypes and promote a more inclusive and diverse scientific community.

The site features interviews with scientists who have made significant contributions in their fields, such as Dr. Myriam Cotten, an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, Dr. Ayana Johnson, a marine biologist and environmental advocate, and Dr. Guy Winch, a clinical psychologist, author, and researcher specializing in the connection between emotional and physical health.

Educators can use this site to promote inclusivity, diversity, and classroom student representation. Each scientist spotlight provides a brief student assignment that can be used to spur discussion and/or student writing, sources for biographical information, and glimpses of research conducted. By highlighting the achievements of these scientists, students are able to see themselves reflected in the scientific community and recognize that there is a place for them in these fields.

The Role of Representation in Learning

As part of our efforts to facilitate diversity, equity, and inclusion, we need to ensure that students feel empowered to succeed. Students need to see themselves as contributing members of the College and in their chosen program of study. This is called Representation and is the focus of many of the articles in this newsletter. In case you missed the Lunch and Learn that presented definitions for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, it is provided here.
